The "eight glasses a day" rule is one of the most persistent health myths — it has no scientific basis and was never in any medical guideline. The actual science of hydration is more nuanced, individual, and interesting. Your daily water requirement depends on your body weight, activity level, climate, diet composition, and health status — it's a calculation, not a fixed number. Getting hydration right matters more than most people realise: even mild dehydration (1–2% body weight water loss) reduces cognitive performance, increases perceived effort during exercise, and impairs kidney function.

How Daily Water Requirements Are Calculated
The most widely cited clinical formula for adult daily water requirement:

Age adjustments:
- Age 18–55: 35 mL/kg/day
- Age 55–65: 30 mL/kg/day (kidney concentrating ability declines)

Does All Fluid Count — or Only Water?
Total daily fluid intake includes all beverages and water content in food:
- Plain water — counts 100%
- Tea and coffee — despite the mild diuretic effect of caffeine, they net hydrate; count at approximately 80%
- Milk — excellent hydrator due to electrolyte content; counts 100%
- Fruit juice and soft drinks — count toward fluid but high sugar slows gastric emptying; not ideal for hydration
- Food water content — fruits and vegetables are 80–95% water; a typical diet provides 700–1000 mL from food sources daily
- Alcohol — is a diuretic; alcohol consumption increases fluid requirement; do not count toward hydration target

For typical daily use, kidneys excrete excess water efficiently. Drinking 2–4× the calculated requirement would be needed to cause harm in healthy adults.
How does fasting during Ramadan affect hydration needs?
During Ramadan, all daily fluid intake must occur between Iftar and Sehri. In Pakistani summer months, the fasting window can be 15+ hours with high ambient temperatures. Consuming the full daily requirement (often 3–4 litres in summer) during the evening/night window is challenging. Prioritise water over other beverages, eat hydrating foods (fruits, yogurt, soups), and avoid excess salt and caffeine which increase fluid loss.
